Spring break is over and now it's time to get serious and work hard on those final assignments coming up, right? Easier said than done. Do you feel like as warm weather approaches and thoughts of summer plans come to mind, you tend to procrastinate a little more? I have that problem too. The last thing I want to think about is working on a final paper or studying for hours. However, I would like to offer some tips on how to avoid procrastination.
First, which scenario best describes you? I'm really not looking forward to doing this 10 page paper on Spain for HST 101 or I never do any assignment until the last possible minute. Sometimes procrastination is just related to the specific assignment that needs to be done. Writing a 10 page paper for History is not appealing and you may just procrastinate because it's a time consuming assignment you don't want to start. However, if your one to always put off things until the last minute, you may want to consider these next few tips I will discuss.
Lay out the project that needs to be done. What steps do you have to take to get to the ending result? What has been done so far? Maybe you could divide the project up into portions and work on each portion for a couple hours a day. That way your not cramming a 6 hour project into one day. Try getting basic steps out of the way, then go back later and add details. Everytime you finish a portion, remind yourself that you're that much closer to being done.
Create a "To Do" List. Keep it simple and as you progress through the project, cross things off. This will help you keep organized and on task. For an incentive, supply yourself with rewards once you acomplish a portion of the project or finish it completely. This will keep you motivated throughout.
Finally, free yourself from any distractions. Try turning off the TV and computer, maybe the extra noise or temptations to get online are hindering your ability to get things done.
I hope I have provided some useful tips to avoid procrastination...Now take advantage of them and look ahead to your future projects that you will be taking on this second half of the semester..Good Luck!
